Well, yes, but even a quick visit to the area will demonstrate that there’s so much more in the city to be discovered and enjoyed. Are you moving to Memphis or considering a move? With an excellent cost of living, exciting teams to cheer for, a lively food scene, lots of diverse opportunities to enjoy live music, beautiful open spaces for playing, hiking and exploring, and award-winning healthcare, Memphis truly has something for everyone.

It’s a rapidly evolving city where locals and transplants alike welcome newcomers. If it looks like you might be one of those newcomers, here are 10 things you need to know before moving to Memphis.

1. Living in Memphis makes great financial sense.

Moving to Memphis could result in a heavier pocketbook as you save money on several fronts. The cost of living in the city is 17% lower than the national average and there is no state income tax. Its economy has recently experienced rapid growth and looks to continue the trend. And as home to several major employers and corporations (such as AutoZone, FedEx, ServiceMaster and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital), there are plenty of opportunities for employment.

2. It’s a sports lover’s paradise.

If you love having a local sports team to fanatically support, Memphis has got you covered. Memphian’s love cheering for their pro basketball team and have plenty of spirit to lend to their Minor League baseball team and their college basketball team. And if NASCAR is your thing, check out the Memphis International Raceway (Where the Racing Rocks).

3. The food is amazing.

With over 100 Memphis BBQ places to visit, you could stay busy simply trying each one. But the Memphis food scene goes far beyond BBQ. With spots like Catherine & Mary’s, Restaurant Iris and McEwen’s, Memphis is a foodie’s paradise, and new restaurants are popping up all the time. Moving to Memphis with a sweet tooth? Don’t miss Muddy’s Bake Shop and Dinstuhl’s Fine Candies.

4. So is the craft beer.

Memphis is home to a thriving craft brewery scene. High Cotton Brewing Company, Memphis Made Brewing Company, Wiseacre Brewing Company and Ghost River Brewing are all delicious local destinations. If you prefer craft cocktails over beer, you’ll find your happy place at Old Dominick Distillery.

5. It’s a beautiful place to be outdoors.

Memphis offers a temperate spring with flowers in riotous bloom, a long and warm summer, an incredible fall with trees in brightly hued splendor and a relatively mild winter. It receives plenty of rain throughout the year and all of that water contributes to its extensive green spaces and natural beauty.

A premier destination for cyclists who are moving to Memphis, the city offers over 400 miles of bike-friendly lanes. Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country with 4500 acres of hiking and horseback riding trails. Beautiful green spaces like the Memphis Botanic Garden and Mud Island River Park, right in the heart of the Mississippi River, provide plenty of places to enjoy the great outdoors.

6. You’ll love its thriving art scene.

The arts are a huge part of Memphis’ character and its continued growth. The UrbanArt Commission has been hard at work creating opportunities for public art and a walk through the city will turn up striking murals and paintings created by local artists.

Broad Avenue Arts District is a hub of boutiques, galleries and studios, and South Main Historic Arts District offers a monthly Trolley Night with live music in the streets, extended hours at galleries and shops, and food and drink specials in restaurants. The city is also a great place to enjoy the performing arts at the Orpheum Theatre and the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

7. There’s something for everyone in its diverse neighborhoods.

From hip Midtown in the city core to the quiet communities of East Memphis, from bustling Downtown to the suburbs of Cordova, there is a neighborhood that can fit anyone moving to Memphis. Memphians take extreme pride in their little corner of the city and often display their neighborhood pride on bumper stickers and t-shirts.

8. Memphis is teeming with great music.

Memphis boasts a phenomenal music scene. It’s the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll and soul music, after all. Many music legends, including Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, were discovered at the famed Sun Studio.

You can still hear the blues live each night in several spots downtown, and there are some pretty fantastic outdoor concert venues, including Levitt Shell, the location of Elvis’ 1954 performance that is widely regarded as the first-ever rock ‘n’ roll concert. Lafayette’s Music Room boasts live bands seven nights a week, but if you’re more interested in music’s storied past, Memphis has got you covered with several top-notch museums.

9. It’s known for its world-class healthcare.

Memphis has received many accolades for its award-winning specialized health centers and is home to nationally ranked children’s hospitals, including St. Jude’s.

10. You will never, ever run out of things to do.

From the Science of Beer festival to the Indie Memphis Film Festival, the city has a wide array of festivals year-round, many of them free. Highlights include the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest and more than one crawfish festival.

Moving to Memphis with kids? There are also loads of kid-friendly activities, including visiting the giant pandas at the Memphis Zoo and exploring the Children’s Museum of Memphis, which features a Grand Carousel. Still looking for things to do? The list goes on.

It’s no wonder that Memphis is thriving. And while all of these things are great, it’s the intangibles that really make the city shine – the Southern hospitality, the funk and soul, and the connection to a long and noteworthy history.
